Propagation & Young plants

As a grower can use various methods for the cultivation of young plants and seedlings, BVB Substrates has developed two main product ranges, each focussing on a specific type of cultivation.

On this page, you’ll find everything about our TRAY product lines, which are focused on cultivation in different tray sizes in varying conditions.

Be sure to have a look at our GRANDIO product line if you cultivate your plants in press blocks.

Substrate for Young plants & Propagation

We can supply growers with several different types of propagation substrates that are best suited for their specific growing conditions and methods. The TRAY-Balance Line is particularly suitable for use in hotter climate zones, while the TRAY-Thrive product line is best for bigger tray sizes. The TRAY-Elite product line is most suitable for the smaller tray and plug sizes. Continue reading to learn more about our different propagation mixtures and their unique qualities.

TRAY-Balance

This growing medium has been specially designed for use in hotter climate zones. The composition of this substrate provides a high water-retention capacity, which is extremely useful in these circumstances.

TRAY-Thrive

TRAY-Thrive has been designed for use in bigger trays, such as 4-7 cm plugs and forest plant trays. It is suitable for intensive production in demanding climate conditions. That means this medium is a particularly good solution when you are dealing with humid and cold conditions or extremely warm and humid conditions.

Due to its coarser texture, TRAY-Thrive is particularly suitable for young plants with strong roots, including grafted rootstock.

TRAY-Thrive-P

The “P” in TRAY-Thrive-P stands for added Perlite. This product is similar to the regular Tray Thrive mixture and can be used for the same crops. However, the perlite brings even more airiness to the growing medium.

TRAY-Elite-M

The “M” in TRAY-Elite-M stands for “Multi-Purpose”. This finer substrate is suitable for trays with 160-600 plugs. It’s an airy mixture, which is extremely important for the development of a strong root system during propagation in this growing medium. Using TRAY-Elite-M will ensure a quick and successful root development from the start.

The medium can be used for machine filling without any issues.

TRAY-Elite-T

The “T” in TRAY-Elite-T stands for “Turbo”. In this version of the Elite line, the finest particles have been removed to ensure a more homogeneous cell filling. Due to the removal of dust, this growing medium has an extremely porous and airy structure that promotes root development.

TRAY-Elite-T is recommended for use with Ellepot systems and is globally used for the propagation of various vegetables, lettuce and herbs.

TRAY-Elite-S

The “S” in TRAY-Elite-S stands for “Strong” because this mixture is particularly suitable for young plants with strong roots and for grafted rootstock. This substrate is specially designed for the intensive production of young plants in demanding climate conditions. Thus, it is an ideal solution when you are dealing with humid and cold conditions or extremely warm and humid conditions.

TRAY-Elite-S provides crops with a higher-than-average drainage capacity, which makes it a great choice for species that are sensitive to overwatering.

BVB Levo for organic cultivation

By using BVB Levo for organic cultivation methods, we build a larger buffer to control the pH value within the substrate during cultivation. BVB Levo also ensures that sufficient nitrifying bacteria are immediately built up at the start of cultivation. These bacteria contribute to a rapid and constant nitrogen release from the start. Thanks to BVB Levo, more absorbable nutrition is released for the plant per kilogram of organic fertiliser than in substrates without this additive. This means the grower needs to use fewer fertilisers for the same cultivation result.

BVB Levo is a certified mixture of a specific type of compost and peat. The mixture is treated during the production process in such a way that it is suitable for use in bio-mixtures.

Based on the desired certification schemes, cultivation period and crop, we put together a specific substrate with the customer, including BVB Levo and desired organic fertilisers.

BVB Levo in use
